Disability-inclusive organic farming for sustainable economic development of marginal farmers in Uttar Pradesh, India

Duration: 4 years starting April 2016
Local partner: PGSS
NZ partners: Trinity Lands, Charitable Trust

This organic farming project focuses on improving food security and income of marginalised farmers and persons with disabilities from Uttar Pradesh which is the most populous state in India and has the highest number of people living in poverty.

Phase 1 which cbm NZ funded from 2012-2015 was highly successful in improving soil fertility, and increasing household income of the farmers. This Phase 2 project builds on the successes of Phase 1 enabling farmers to lift themselves out of the cycle of poverty. This is a model project that can be replicated throughout India.

THE NEED
The people of Uttar Pradesh rely predominantly on agriculture for their livelihood which is a challenge because of reduced soil fertility and a reliance on chemical fertilisers. Poor conditions and inadequate health services have contributed to an increasing number of persons with disabilities in Uttar Pradesh over the last decade. The presence of disability in a rural family increases vulnerability and the associated stigma results in exclusion from education, employment and social activities. Often uneducated and landless, persons with disabilities experience the highest levels of vulnerability.

Most of these people are subsistence farmers. Their small plots of land do not sit directly outside their homes, but in fields surrounding the village which reduces accessibility for farmers with mobility and sight impairments.

HOW WE ARE HELPING DURING PHASE 2
• Farmers with disabilities will be trained in organic farming
• They will be supplied with specialised assistive devices to enable them to work in the fields
• Farmer Organisations will be created and linked to banks so they can work together and produce in bulk
• Links to bigger markets will be developed enabling farmers access to more buyers.
